It was Wednesday 13th June 2007,Matthew was traveling on his brand new Honda 125 bike when he was in collision with another car in Harpenden near St Albans.
I shall never forget the build up to the dreadful news that Matthew had been killed instantly. I was at work as usual when his wife phoned me in a distressed state telling me that the local road was closed due to a serious accident and that she could not get hold of Matt. Very quickly we established that he had not arrived at work. The horrifying facts were now slowly unfolding - the accident had involved our darling Matthew. I can just remember screaming when the news was broken to me and then telephoning my husband to tell him that Matthew was dead.
Matthew was 22 in January. On June 3rd 2006 he had married Claire in St Albans. They had their honeymoon in the Dominican Republique. They had just bought their first house together in Luton and were so happy. He was a keen Angler and was an active member of the Verulam Angling Club. He also played darts for the White Horse in St Albans and had just started a new darts team at the Baton Pub in St Albans. He also loved football and played for the St Albans Royals.
Matthew will be missed by so many, his wife Claire, his brother Ricky and sister Hannah, both sets of grandparents, and all his aunties, uncles and cousins especially Andrew. And all of his many friends.
Matthew - we will always remember you - my heart is broken and will never mend - I cannot imagine our lives without you but you know how close we all are and we will all help each other through this terrible time. I promise that we will look after your parrot 'Jack' and you know what I said to you the day before your funeral when I came to see you - don't forget. I hope you are happy up there and that you have found your dog Roger. I know that he was waiting at the Rainbow Bridge for you so that you could cross it together.
I expect that you were having a giggle when you saw how many people turned up at your funeral. Around 450 - you touched so many peoples lives.
Matthew we will be together again one day but until that day arrives God Bless we all love and miss you. Mum xx

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent, the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress his beloved head and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you pass over Rainbow Bridge together....
Roger was waiting for Matthew on 13th June 2007.
I saw Ron the other day & we were both recalling our memories of you-we both ended up in tears but also laughed about some things too! He gave me a big squeeze!!
He said he misses his best partner-he said playing along side you,that you were able to beat anyone who challenged you!
I hope ur still playing & winning where you are now :) Ron said you've no doubt got your own league set up and are still winning all the way :) xx

We hope you liked the words Mark spoke at the little service we held down at the yard this morning. Claire did a floral tribute to you and we hope you liked that too, she also cleaned your plaque, but as you know she ran out of brasso :( however, she did her best to make it shine on this day!! As we drove out, we saw a robin - unusual for this time of year, and we know it was you saying hello and thanks for thinking of me today. Matthew on Sunday we held your memorial footy match. Your team 'The St Albans Royals' won the trophy again ! It was so sad to see all your mates playing and you not out there. All their shirts had your name on and they all had black armbands on.
You have a truly wonderfull set of mates who are all growing up - some with babies which breaks my heart to see as I know how much you would have liked to be a daddy. 'They' say times a healer - its not - losing you is still as raw today as the day you were taken from us.I only hope that you are in a better place than we are and that you are happy.
